Black Friday

Went to Best Buy to purchase my hubby his long-dreamt of mega HDTV. If that wasn't an act of love, I don't know what is. I can vouch that we will never shop on Black Friday again. Jesus, it was like the zoo with the monkey cage left open.

I treated myself to a movie and went to see Twilight. It was a faithful if also anemic adaptation of the novel, which would pretty much explain why I fell asleep. I missed sparkly!vampire. Goddamn it. I paid good money to see just that and I missed it! Oh well, I'll netflix it when it comes out and watch the sparklies on the HDTV. I must remember to wear shades...

Is Black Friday some kind of super-shopping event in the US? (And yes, you're a very selfless person for buying a TV for your husband and fighting your way through masses of dangerous, fellow shoppers. Go you!)

Yeah, it's the Friday right after Thanksgiving which is always on Thursday. The term 'Black Friday' is derived from accounting. People in the U.S. kept books in two colors: red and black. They use red ink when the business is in debt. However, the Friday after Thanksgiving has traditionally been the day where the retail business actually starts earning money. So, the accountants would balance out that day's sales and start using black ink at the end of it. Hence, Black Friday.
